LEBAK PORTAL – The United Nations Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Saturday 6 June 2026 condemned the air strikes that resulted in the deaths of members of the Lebanese military in the southern part of the country, and considered it a violation of national sovereignty as well as important UN resolutions.

In a statement posted on X’s social media account, UNIFIL expressed its sympathy to the Lebanese Armed Forces and the families of the soldiers who were reported killed as a result of attacks in the Nabatieh area that day.

“This kind of attack on Lebanese territory constitutes a serious violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and Security Council Resolution 1701,” the mission said.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called the incident a crime against Lebanon and its citizens.

The Israeli army acknowledged that it targeted the vehicle and stated that the incident was under investigation.

The Israelis argued that the vehicle was moving in a suspicious manner near their troops in an area known to have Hezbollah activity.

These attacks occurred despite an unstable ceasefire coming into force in April, while diplomatic efforts continued to prevent a new escalation along the Lebanon-Israel border.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, emphasized the need for a cessation of hostilities as well as respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty.***
