Germany, the United States, and the Netherlands have all secured places in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after finishing as winners of their respective groups.
A surprise came in Group E as Ecuador defeated Germany 2-1 in the final group-stage match at New York/New Jersey Stadium, United States, on Friday, June 26, 2026.
Germany took an early lead through Leroy Sané in the second minute. However, Ecuador equalized just seven minutes later with a goal from Nelson Angulo. Gonzalo Plata completed the comeback with the winning goal in the 77th minute.
Despite the defeat, Der Panzer finished top of Group E with six points. Ivory Coast also collected six points and secured second place after defeating Curaçao 2-0. Meanwhile, Ecuador advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams with four points.
Reflecting on the loss, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted that his players made several mistakes that allowed Ecuador to turn the match around.
“We started the match well. Unfortunately, immediately after scoring, we committed what I would call tactical suicide because of our positioning. That made the game much more difficult,” Nagelsmann said.
He added that Ecuador showed tremendous determination to earn a positive result, which was evident from the intensity they displayed throughout the match.
Nagelsmann also said he would have preferred not to enter the knockout stage following a defeat.
“Losing is never enjoyable, even when first place in the group has already been secured. We’ll learn from this and keep moving forward. We have to improve, but we also need to focus on what’s ahead,” he said.
United States Still Top Group D Despite Defeat
In Group D, host nation the United States suffered a 3-2 defeat to Türkiye. However, the result did not affect the Americans’ position as group winners.
The Stars and Stripes finished with six points, followed by Australia and Paraguay, who both collected four points after playing out a scoreless draw in their final group-stage match. All three teams advanced to the knockout stage.
United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino made sweeping changes for the final group match, rotating nine players from the starting lineup. He insisted that the defeat would not affect the team’s momentum heading into the knockout rounds.
“Our objective was to finish first, and we did. Now we move on to the next stage, where every match is a final. We’re ready,” Pochettino said.
The United States will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.
Netherlands Win Group F
In Group F, the Netherlands, Japan, and Sweden all progressed to the Round of 32.
The Netherlands topped the group with seven points. Japan finished second with five points after drawing 1-1 with Sweden in the final group match. Sweden also advanced as one of the best third-placed teams with four points.
The Dutch defeated Tunisia 3-1 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Netherlands’ goals came through an own goal by Ellyes Skhiri in the third minute, Brian Brobbey in the seventh minute, and Jan Paul van Hecke in the 62nd minute. Hazem Mastouri scored Tunisia’s only goal in the 54th minute.
Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman warned against celebrating too early, with Morocco awaiting his team in the Round of 32.
“I’m not sure we’re the favorites against Morocco. We have to prepare well because it will be a major match. They’re an excellent team with plenty of quality and the ability to score goals easily,” Koeman said.***
