JOGJA PORTAL – War is still a phenomenon that continues to color the course of human history. From the colonial era to the modern era, various countries in the world have not been free from armed conflict, either to defend sovereignty or certain interests.

Currently, the escalation of global conflict is increasing again. Tensions in the Middle East heated up after the United States and Israel’s attack on Iran reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the end of February. This condition occurs in the midst of other conflicts that have not subsided, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the conflict in Gaza.

Lecturer in the History Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Satrio Dwicahyo, M.Sc., MA, believes that war is not merely an innate human instinct, but is the result of a complex interaction of various factors.

“There are biological, psychological aspects and also social interactions. War and violence in general are a combination of these dimensions, only to varying degrees,” he explained, Tuesday (7/4).

According to him, from a historical perspective, these factors continue to develop along with technological advances and changes in the structure of society. On the one hand, this development can make war easier, but on the other hand it also has the potential to become an obstacle.

Satrio also highlighted the debate regarding the roots of human aggressiveness, whether it comes from primate heritage or whether ancient humans lived peacefully. He considers these two views to be complementary.

“Humans use violence to survive, but at the same time also develop peaceful mechanisms. In many cultures, including Eastern perspectives, the two always coexist,” he said.
