THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – Based on a Reuters report on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, US President Donald Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, less than two hours before the deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face major attacks on its civilian infrastructure. The announcement was a sudden change in direction from Trump’s threat earlier the same day that all civilization would die that night if his demands were not met.

Trump announced the ceasefire via Truth Social and called it a two-way truce. He said Iran had put forward a 10-point proposal that would provide a workable basis for negotiations and hoped a deal could be finalized within the two-week window. Trump also stated that the step was taken because US military objectives were said to have been met, while talks towards long-term peace with Iran and the Middle East were considered to be far along.

The ceasefire was conditioned on Iran’s willingness to pause its blockade on oil and gas supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran would stop retaliatory attacks and provide safe passage through the waters. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is said to have helped mediate the ceasefire, said Iranian and US delegations had been invited to meet in Islamabad on Friday.

A Different Picture

However, the two sides provide very different pictures of this ceasefire. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council described the deal as a victory for the United States and claimed Trump had accepted Iran’s terms for ending hostilities.

On the other hand, two White House officials confirmed that Israel had also agreed to a two-week ceasefire and stopped its bombing campaign against Iran.
