Hi Bandung – The Italian Foreign Ministry summoned the Israeli ambassador on Wednesday (8/4) after Italy’s UNIFIL peacekeeping vehicle was damaged by warning shots in Lebanon.
This step shows Italy’s strong protest over the incident while emphasizing the importance of protection for UN peacekeeping forces.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, in a post on the X platform, said that he had just instructed that the Israeli ambassador to Italy be summoned to the Italian Foreign Ministry to clarify what was happening in Lebanon.
Antonio Tajani also stressed that the Italian military would remain untouched.
Shot
The move was taken after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told the Italian parliament that a convoy of Italian UNIFIL troops had been hit by gunfire during the escalation of tensions.
“Israeli warning fire damaged one of our vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the convoy (Italian UNIFIL) had to turn back,” Tajani said, as reported by ANSA News Agency.
Initially, said Antonio Tajani, the convoy brought personnel to Beirut for repatriation.
He also warned about the intensification of Israeli operations, saying there had been the heaviest Israeli bombing since the resumption of the war and 150 planes were reportedly involved across Lebanon.
