Appreciation of BRICS Membership and Increased Trade

President Vladimir Putin warmly welcomed Prabowo’s presence and appreciated Indonesia’s decision to join BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in 2025. According to Putin, Indonesia’s membership in BRICS opens new doors for the development of broader strategic cooperation.

“Indonesia has become a member of BRICS. This opens up new opportunities to develop cooperation,” said Putin.

Putin also noted that bilateral relations between the two countries continued to show a positive trend, especially in the economic sector. Data shows that trade volume between Russia and Indonesia will increase by 12 percent in 2025. He hopes that this meeting can produce solutions to continue to improve the strategic partnership that was previously declared.

Energy Diversification and National Independence

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin became a wide public spotlight. This meeting is seen as Indonesia’s strategic step in strengthening national energy security amidst global dynamics.

Prabowo conveyed the importance of strengthening economic and energy cooperation. Putin emphasized Russia’s support, while at the same time appreciating Indonesia’s membership in BRICS which opens up new opportunities for strategic partnerships.

Key highlights of this meeting:

• Development of oil refineries for energy processing capacity
• Potential for alternative energy cooperation, including nuclear
• Strengthening the industrial and manufacturing sectors
• Education and technology collaboration

Putin added that cross-sector cooperation also includes space, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and humanitarian affairs.

Energy Diplomacy, Not Just Visits
This step is not just a ceremony, but part of Indonesia’s active diplomacy. The focus is on ensuring stable and sustainable energy access, while expanding the network of strategic partners.

Energy Security is Key

National energy policy is based on four main aspects:

1. Availability – energy supply is always there
2. Accessibility – even distribution throughout the region
3. Affordability – prices remain affordable to the public
4. Acceptance – environmentally friendly energy

Free and Active Foreign Policy

This visit reflects Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy. By opening up opportunities for cooperation with various countries, Indonesia seeks to reduce the risk of energy dependence and strengthen its bargaining position in the international arena.

Public debate in the digital space is natural. Some believe that Indonesia should maximize domestic resources, while others see supply diversification as a rational step in facing global pressures.

The Prabowo–Putin meeting emphasized the direction of Indonesia’s energy policy: not just imports, but building the foundation for national energy independence through long-term strategic cooperation.***
