THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – Efforts to end the war between the United States and Iran have again encountered serious obstacles. US President Donald Trump is reportedly dissatisfied with the latest proposal put forward by Tehran, especially because it rules out discussing Iran’s nuclear program until after the war ends.

Reporting from Reuters, a US official who attended Trump’s meeting with his advisers on Monday, April 27 2026, stated that Trump was not happy with Iran’s proposal.

Washington has consistently emphasized that the nuclear issue must be discussed from the start of negotiations, not postponed until the final stage. The official spoke on condition of anonymity.

White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales stated that the US would not negotiate through the media and had clearly conveyed its red lines in this conflict.

Based on information from senior Iranian officials quoted by Reuters anonymously, the proposal that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi brought to Islamabad over the weekend had three stages.

First, the US and Israel stopped the war on Iran and gave guarantees that the conflict would not restart. Second, resolving the US Navy’s naval blockade on Iranian trade and discussing the fate of the Strait of Hormuz which Iran wants to regain control of.

Third, other issues including Iran’s nuclear program were discussed, with Tehran still demanding Washington’s recognition of its right to enrich uranium.

Hopes of restarting peace talks also faded after Trump canceled a planned visit by his special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner to Islamabad last weekend.

Araqchi himself reportedly went back and forth to Islamabad twice over the weekend, then visited Oman, and on Monday flew to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin, who has provided support for Iran.

He also told journalists in Russia that the number one person in the United States had asked for negotiations because the US was deemed to have not achieved any of its goals in this conflict.

On the trade side, the impact of the conflict on Strait of Hormuz traffic is increasingly felt. Reporting from Reuters, based on Kpler ship tracking data and SynMax satellite analysis, only seven ships passed in and out of the strait in the last day.

Before the war started, between 125 and 140 ships usually passed through each day. None of the seven ships carries oil for the global market.

At least six tankers laden with Iranian oil were reportedly forced to turn back to Iran due to the US Navy blockade in recent days based on ship tracking data.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US seizure of a Tehran-linked tanker as a blatant legalization of piracy and armed robbery on the high seas.

World oil prices rose again in response to this condition. Market analyst Fawad Razaqzada from City Index and FOREX.com said that for oil traders, what is most important is no longer the rhetoric of both parties but the physical flow of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently still very limited.

With his public approval ratings continuing to decline, Trump faces domestic pressure to end a war whose reasons have changed several times before the US public.

The previous Iran nuclear deal reached in 2015 between Iran and a number of countries including the US succeeded in significantly limiting Iran’s nuclear program. But the deal collapsed when Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in his first term.***
