FBI Investigates Washington Shooter's Cross-State Travel Before Taking Action

OUR DRIVE-Federal investigators are expanding their investigation into Cole Thomas Allen, 31, the suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The focus of the investigation is now directed at cross-country travel, online activities and the suspect’s writings in order to determine the motive for the attack.

Local authorities identified Allen as coming from Torrance, California. He is believed to have traveled by train from the West Coast to Washington before carrying out the action.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that investigators have been tracking Allen’s movements.

“It appears he traveled from Los Angeles via Chicago to Washington, DC, and it appears he traveled by train during both parts of the trip,” said Blanche, Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Officials said that Allen checked in at the Washington Hilton shortly before the annual dinner attended by President Donald Trump and senior officials was to begin.

Currently, the investigative team is examining the suspect’s communications and electronic devices.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Blanche stated, “They are checking the shooter’s electronic devices and talking to people who know him.”

Blanche added, “Based on the work, it appears he did intend to target people who work in government, possibly including the President.”

Law enforcement sources told Fox News that the suspect had indicated plans to “shoot Trump administration officials” after being arrested.

In addition, the document suspected of being a manifesto is currently being reviewed. The document reportedly contains political rhetoric and references targeting government officials.

Before the incident occurred, family members had reportedly alerted police to suspicious communications from Allen, including statements about plans for action.

The FBI has now secured the suspect’s residence in Torrance to execute a search warrant.

It is known that Allen purchased a firearm legally and had practiced using it before the attack.

Cole Thomas Allen is now in custody and facing multiple federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and firearms offenses.

Although the investigation is still in its early stages, Blanche believes the suspect acted alone.

“We don’t believe there were other parties involved, but we still have a lot of work to do,” he said.

A multi-agency investigation involving the FBI, Secret Service, and local police continues to be prioritized to explore the perpetrator’s intentions as well as their connection to certain ideologies or other factors.***
