May 1 was chosen as World Labor Day to commemorate the Haymarket incident on May 4, 1886.

This incident occurred in Chicago, Illinois, United States during a labor strike, when an unknown person threw a bomb at police gathered for crowd control.
Police then responded by opening fire on the workers, killing four of them and wounding many others.
Since then, World Labor Day has been celebrated on the first day of May on every continent.
