THE THOUGHTS OF THE PEOPLE OF SULTENG – A group of humanitarian activists who are members of the international mission “Gaza Aid Flotilla” finally set foot again on Dutch soil on Monday (4/5/2026). Their arrival at Schiphol Airport was greeted with emotional sobs and cheers from their families and hundreds of supporters who had been waiting. These activists were previously detained by the Israeli military in international waters while trying to bring medical and logistical aid to the Gaza Strip.

The mission, which aimed to challenge Israel’s naval blockade, ended in an intercept

force in the middle of the sea. The ship they were on was surrounded by Israeli navy warships before armed personnel finally climbed onto the deck and took control of the ship. The activists were then taken to the port of Ashdod in Israel to undergo a brief examination and detention process before finally being deported back to their respective countries of origin.

“We saw firsthand how urgently needed humanitarian assistance was

Gaza residents are considered a security threat. This detention will not deter him

“Our intention is that this proves that the blockade is real and inhumane,”

said one senior Dutch activist shortly after leaving the arrival gate.

Tensions in International Waters.

An Al Jazeera video report shows the dramatic moments of the aid ship

was intercepted. The activists emphasized that they were still in their position when they were intercepted

international waters, which according to international maritime law are not supposed to be under

Israeli jurisdiction. However, Israeli authorities insist that any attempt to approach Gaza by sea without official coordination constitutes a serious security violation. While in detention, the activists admitted that they were given limited access to communicate

with outside parties. Nonetheless, diplomatic pressure from the Dutch government and human rights organizations in Europe accelerated the process of their repatriation.

The Dutch government itself expressed its concern over the incident and continues to call for wider humanitarian access to Gaza through safe and internationally recognized routes. Government Response and Crisis Conditions in Gaza.

This incident has once again sparked debate regarding the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip

getting worse. According to the latest data, health facilities in Gaza are experiencing a shortage of medicines of up to 60%, while food supplies coming in by land are far from sufficient to meet the needs of millions of residents. The failure of this sea mission was a major blow to the hopes of Gaza residents who were waiting for emergency assistance.

In The Hague, a number of parliamentarians began to press for the European Union to take a stand

be more firm on Israel’s actions in international waters. They argued that detaining civilians carrying medical aid was unjustified. On the other hand, the Israeli government maintains its argument that the naval blockade is necessary to prevent weapons from entering the hands of the militant groups that control Gaza.

Community Hope and Mission Continuity.

Although the mission this time failed to reach the Gaza coast, activists say they did

have started planning the next fleet delivery. They hope that the support of the world community will not fade just because of military obstacles. The community’s great hope is for intervention from the United Nations (UN) to directly supervise aid ships so that similar incidents do not occur again in the future.

Demonstrations as a form of solidarity also broke out in several large cities in Europe

coincided with the return of these activists. The community demands justice for citizens

Gaza was immediately established and all forms of obstacles to humanitarian assistance were unconditionally removed. For the activists, their greatest success was not in getting aid to land, but in their success in opening the world’s eyes to the situation that occurred behind the blockade walls.

With this round of detention over, the focus now shifts to how the community is doing

international response to this act of interception. Will there be any policy changes

or whether the status quo will remain, what is clear is the enthusiasm these volunteers have provided

a strong message that humanitarian solidarity does not recognize territorial boundaries or the threat of weapons.***
