LEBAK PORTAL – A 24-year-old Korean man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of several people.

At around 12:11 on May 5, 2026, a 17-year-old middle school student was fatally stabbed on a pedestrian path near Nambu University in Gwangsan-gu while walking home alone.

Hearing her screams, a male high school student, who did not know the first victim, intervened, trying to help her. He was also attacked.

The male victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the assault. The female victim was taken to hospital for treatment, where she died from her injuries.

The suspect, surnamed Jang, fled the scene – taking a private vehicle, then switching to a taxi – but he was arrested about 11 hours later, at around 11.24am on the same day.

While being detained at the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, Jang reportedly told police that he had no apparent motive for attacking the female victim, whom he did not know.

He claimed that he had suicidal thoughts before the attack, and that he had no particular reason for stabbing the female victim, a disheveled passerby.

Authorities believe the suspect waited, in his parked car, until he saw the female victim.

The stabbing occurred on Children’s Day, a national holiday dedicated to celebrating children.
