The Indonesia U-19 National Team failed to advance to the AFF U-19 2026 final after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Australia in the semifinal match. The decisive encounter took place at Sumut Sport Center Stadium in Deli Serdang on Thursday night, June 11, 2026.
The Young Garuda put in a determined performance and managed to hold the Young Socceroos level until the 88th minute. However, disaster struck in the 89th minute when Australia broke the deadlock through Marcus Neil, who capitalized on a defensive error to score the winning goal.
The defeat ended Indonesia’s hopes of reaching the tournament final. Australia secured a place in the championship match, where they will face Thailand, who defeated Cambodia 4-0 in the other semifinal.
Although their title hopes have ended, Indonesia still have one match remaining. Nova Arianto’s squad will take on Cambodia in the third-place playoff of the AFF U-19 2026 tournament.
From the opening whistle, Australia controlled possession and put constant pressure on Indonesia’s defense. However, the backline, led by Nazriel Alvaro and his teammates, stood firm and successfully denied several dangerous scoring opportunities.
The sustained pressure forced Indonesian players into a number of defensive fouls. In the 16th minute, Nazriel Alvaro was shown a yellow card after bringing down an Australian attacking player.
Just two minutes later, Alexander Garbowski nearly gave Australia the lead after breaking free from Indonesia’s defenders. Fortunately for the hosts, the striker’s powerful effort drifted just wide of the goal.
Indonesia attempted to relieve the pressure through quick counterattacks. In the 26th minute, striker Arkhan Kaka tried his luck with a long-range effort from outside the penalty area, but the ball sailed well over the crossbar.
Australia created three clear-cut chances during the first half and came close to scoring on several occasions. However, poor finishing prevented the visitors from taking the lead, and the match remained goalless at halftime.
Late Heartbreak
The second half saw Indonesia improve significantly and gradually find ways to break out of Australia’s dominance. The Young Garuda threatened the Australian goal early in the half through dangerous opportunities created by Arkhan Kaka and Muhammad Isfandyar in the 48th and 51st minutes.
Unlike in the opening period, Indonesia’s midfield was able to match Australia’s creativity and intensity. Another promising opportunity arrived in the 66th minute when Arkhan Kaka directed an effort toward goal.
As the match entered its closing stages, Australia increased the tempo and launched repeated attacks, forcing Indonesia’s defenders to work tirelessly to keep the score level.
The decisive moment came just one minute before the end of normal time. Marcus Neil managed to turn the ball into Indonesia’s net in the 89th minute. The goal was initially ruled out by the referee, who believed the Australian player had been in an offside position.
However, following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the decision was overturned and the goal was awarded.
Australia’s 1-0 lead remained intact until the final whistle, sending the Young Socceroos into the AFF U-19 2026 final while Indonesia were left to compete for third place.
