SABACIREBON – The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the cancellation of the meeting between the United States and Iran which was originally scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday (19/6). This information was reported by the Reuters news agency and quoted by RIA Novosti.
The cancellation occurred in the midst of the continuing process of implementing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which had been agreed upon by the two countries as an initial step towards resolving tensions and more comprehensive negotiations.
Previously, a number of reports stated that the Vice President of the United States, JD Vancehas not yet left for Switzerland because a number of technical aspects related to the meeting agenda have not yet been fully finalized.

On June 14, the US and Iranian governments confirmed that the process of drafting a memorandum of understanding had been completed. This agreement provides a foundation for the two countries to continue dialogue on a number of strategic issues which have been a source of tension.
According to reports circulating, on Thursday the two parties signed the MoU online as part of efforts to end the military conflict which was said to have started on February 28.
In the document, the US and Iran are given 60 days to negotiate a final agreement covering the issue of Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of various sanctions that Washington has imposed on Tehran.

In addition, the memorandum of understanding also contains a schedule for implementing a number of important steps, including a deadline for the United States to end the naval blockade and Iran’s commitment to restoring smooth shipping traffic in Strait of Hormuz.
Even though face-to-face meetings in Switzerland were cancelled, the latest developments show that diplomatic channels between the two countries are still open. The main focus is currently focused on implementing the points agreed upon in the MoU as well as the negotiation process towards a final agreement in the coming weeks.
Observers assess that the successful implementation of this memorandum of understanding will be an important factor in determining the stability of the Middle East region, especially regarding global energy security and the smooth running of international trade routes across the Strait of Hormuz.***
