England Defeat Croatia 4-2 as Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham Silence Critics at the 2026 World Cup

Harry Kane takes a penalty kick

The England national team silenced its critics with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in its opening Group L match at Dallas Stadium on Thursday, June 18, 2026. The result provided a significant boost for the Three Lions in their pursuit of a second World Cup title, having last won the tournament in 1966.

Prior to the competition, head coach Thomas Tuchel had faced criticism for leaving out several high-profile players, including Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, and Cole Palmer. However, his squad responded in emphatic fashion by defeating one of their toughest rivals in the group stage.

Captain Harry Kane scored twice, finding the net in the 12th minute from the penalty spot and again in the 42nd minute. England’s other goals came from Jude Bellingham in the 47th minute and Marcus Rashford in the 85th minute. Croatia’s goals were scored by Martin Baturina in the 36th minute and Petar Musa in stoppage time of the first half (45+5).

Tuchel admitted that his team had played too cautiously before halftime. According to him, the instructions delivered in the dressing room proved to be the turning point for England’s resurgence in the second half.

“We were too safe in the first half. I loved the players’ reaction in the second half. They were willing to take risks, won more duels, and deserved the victory,” he said.

Harry Kane revealed that Tuchel’s halftime team talk played a crucial role in England’s turnaround. The striker explained that the manager encouraged the players to stick to their own style of play, even if it meant taking risks.

“The coach told us to let go of the pressure and play without fear. What’s the worst that could happen? Lose the first match of the group stage. We had to show the world who we really are,” Kane said.

The victory gives England valuable momentum ahead of its second Group L match against Ghana. If the Three Lions can maintain the level of performance they displayed against Croatia, their chances of making a deep run at the 2026 World Cup will be significantly strengthened.

Meanwhile, disappointment was evident in the Croatian camp. However, the team, nicknamed Vatreni, chose to focus on the positives from its performance as preparation for the remaining group-stage matches.

Croatian midfielder Petar Sucic believed his side still demonstrated strong character despite suffering defeat.

“Of course we are disappointed. But this was our first match at the World Cup, and I think we played quite well,” he said.

Dramatic Ghana Victory

Elsewhere, Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, Canada. A goal from Caleb Yirenkyi in the 95th minute ensured that the Black Stars collected all three points in their opening match.

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo expressed relief after the crucial win.

“We are all very relieved because we understand how important this match was. This victory gives us confidence heading into the next game,” he said.

Ghana will now face a major test against England in its next Group L fixture. According to Semenyo, the victory over Panama provides valuable momentum ahead of the clash with one of the tournament favorites.

“It will be a very difficult match. We needed this win to boost our confidence. We have talent and something to prove in this tournament,” he said.***
