Curaçao Has a Chance to Make History in Crucial Match Against Ivory Coast

Ecuador vs Curacao

Although Germany has already secured a place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the battle in Group E remains highly intriguing. The race for the remaining automatic qualification spot and a possible best third-place finish is still open to Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and tournament debutants Curaçao.

After two matches, Germany sits at the top of the standings with six points after winning both of its games. Ivory Coast is second with three points, followed by Ecuador and Curaçao, who each have one point.

The final group matches on Friday, June 26, 2026, will determine who joins Germany in the knockout stage. Curaçao will face Ivory Coast at Philadelphia Stadium, while Ecuador takes on Germany at New York/New Jersey Stadium in the United States.

The biggest spotlight is undoubtedly on Curaçao. The small Caribbean nation has an opportunity to make history in its first-ever World Cup appearance.

After suffering a 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening match, many expected Curaçao to be the weakest team in the group. However, everything changed when they held Ecuador to a goalless draw.

The result not only earned Curaçao its first-ever World Cup point but also kept its hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. It is a historic achievement that head coach Dick Advocaat and his players are now aiming to build upon.

The hero of Curaçao’s performance against Ecuador was undoubtedly Eloy Room. The 37-year-old veteran goalkeeper delivered a remarkable display, making 15 saves and matching the legendary record set by United States goalkeeper Tim Howard at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“This match was full of emotions. To earn a point in this way for Curaçao is simply incredible,” Room said.

Now, Curaçao has only one mission: defeat Ivory Coast.

If Curaçao secures all three points and Ecuador fails to beat Germany, the Caribbean side will make history by advancing to the knockout stage in its World Cup debut.

That hope was echoed by Curaçao midfielder Godfried Roemeratoe, who has Moluccan heritage. He believes his team can surprise many people despite being placed in a difficult group.

“The opponents are tough, but we have a lot of quality. We want to create a surprise and earn points,” he said.

For Ivory Coast, the situation is somewhat more comfortable. Les Éléphants only need a draw to secure second place in the group.

However, head coach Emerse Faé insists his team cannot afford to relax after its defeat to Germany.

“Our fate is still in our own hands—or rather, at our own feet,” Faé said.

The loss to Germany was particularly frustrating for Ivory Coast, especially after Franck Kessié had given the team an early lead. Germany’s experience ultimately proved decisive as they fought back to claim victory.

The match against Curaçao is expected to be fiercely contested. Ivory Coast may have the advantage in individual quality, but Curaçao enters the game full of confidence following its heroic performance against Ecuador.***
