Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has officially confirmed that access to the online discussion platform Reddit has been restored after the website had been blocked in the country for approximately 11 years.
Users in Indonesia can now access reddit.com directly without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), whether on desktop computers or mobile devices.
Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi, Alexander Sabar, said the decision was made after the government held discussions with Reddit representatives and reviewed the platform’s compliance with Indonesia’s regulatory requirements.
“Komdigi approved the restoration of access to reddit.com after completing a series of consultations and verifying compliance with the applicable regulations in Indonesia,” Alexander said in a statement received by Pikiran-Rakyat.com on Friday, July 3, 2026.
According to Alexander, the government’s assessment found that Reddit has implemented a geoblocking mechanism specifically for Indonesia.
In addition, the platform has introduced measures to restrict access to or remove illegal content, including gambling, pornography, and other material that violates Indonesian laws and regulations.
He explained that these measures were among the key considerations behind the government’s decision to normalize access to the platform.
However, Komdigi emphasized that Reddit is still required to register as a Private Electronic System Operator (PSE) in Indonesia. The platform must also continue complying with all applicable Indonesian laws and regulations.***
