BUTOLPOST – Tensions between the United States and Iran have heated up again after US President Donald Trump made new threats to Tehran. However, behind this harsh rhetoric, the diplomatic route remains open.
Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeli Baghaei, emphasized that negotiations between Iran and the United States in Burgenstock, Switzerland, had not collapsed due to Trump’s threats. Even though the Iranian delegation stopped participating in the four-party meeting after the US President’s statement emerged, communication through mediators continued.
According to Baghaei, when the talks entered a break for internal consultations, the media reported Trump’s threat that he would attack Iran again if Tehran did not control its ally in Lebanon. This response made the Iranian delegation decide not to continue direct meetings with the US, Pakistan and Qatar.
However, diplomatic channels are not completely cut off. Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar continue to convey messages and exchange views between the two countries, so that the negotiation process continues indirectly.
Iran’s statement also denied reports that their delegation had left the negotiating table completely. Previously, US Vice President JD Vance even stated that the Iranian delegation had never really left the negotiation process.
These negotiations are very important because they follow the signing of a memorandum governing the cessation of military conflict between the two countries. The deal also includes plans to lift the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for world energy trade.
This development shows that even though the war of statements continues, both Washington and Tehran still leave room for a resolution through diplomacy. Political threats do not seem to be able to close the door to dialogue which is the main hope for stability in the Middle East region.
