Garut PR- Washington is again rocked by a serious political crisis. Tuesday afternoon local time, the wave of pressure on the President of the United States, Donald Trump, increased drastically after his statement threatening to “end Iranian civilization” sparked widespread anger on Capitol Hill.

At least 30 Democratic members of Congress in the White House have openly called for extreme measures: activating the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution or initiating impeachment proceedings. The call came after Trump issued a harsh ultimatum to Tehran, giving Tehran a deadline of 8 p.m. to meet Washington’s demands, or face the complete collapse of vital infrastructure, from energy to water systems.

The rhetoric uttered by Trump is considered to have crossed the line. His remarks calling Iranians “animals” and threats against civilian facilities sparked sharp criticism.

Lawmakers like Ro Khanna called it a “moral crime as well as a war crime,” while Rashida Tlaib accused the president of encouraging actions that amount to genocide. A similar tone was voiced by Ilhan Omar who considered Trump unstable and dangerous to remain in control.

The pressure even spread to the Senate. Ed Markey publicly called on the United States military not to carry out orders that violate international law, a rare move that signals an extraordinary level of concern among legislators.

Constitutional Mechanisms on the Edge

In the midst of the heated situation, attention is focused on the 25th Amendment, a constitutional mechanism that allows the removal of the president if he is deemed incapable of carrying out his duties. This process relies on the Vice President, JD Vance, along with a majority of the cabinet to officially declare the president’s incapacity to Congress.

If this step is taken, power will immediately shift to the vice president as executor. However, Trump has the right to contest and reclaim office, opening the possibility of a further political fight in Congress that would require a two-thirds vote for a final decision.

Even though the pressure is getting stronger, political realities are a big obstacle. The cabinet’s loyalty to Trump and the dominance of the Republican Party in Congress make this scenario difficult to realize in the near future. The impeachment effort previously initiated by Al Green is still stuck in the midst of the configuration of legislative power.

Cracks in the Conservative Camp

Interestingly, criticism does not only come from the opposition. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a conservative figure who is known as a Trump ally, actually voiced support for the use of the 25th Amendment. In his public statements, he asserted that destroying a civilization was not only unjustified, but also a reflection of insanity.

These developments put the United States in one of the most serious constitutional crises in recent decades. As the conflict in the Middle East enters its seventh week and continues to destroy the region’s infrastructure, leadership uncertainty in Washington is actually exacerbating global tensions.

Now, the world is waiting: will the American democratic system be able to reduce the turmoil from within, before the impact spreads beyond the country’s borders.***
