The Israeli military claims to have launched attacks on more than 100 points in just about 10 minutes. This operation is said to be part of their military strategy.
The targets of the attacks included a number of important areas such as Beirut, the Beqaa Valley, as well as the southern area of Lebanon which is known as the power base of the Hezbollah group.
The wave of attacks on Wednesday was even said to be the biggest since the latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah broke out on March 2, which continues to escalate.
The death toll from the attack was reported to have reached at least 254 people. Of this number, 92 of the victims died were in the Beirut area.
Apart from the deaths, the number of injured victims is estimated to be much greater. Hospitals in Lebanon are reportedly overwhelmed by the surge in patients arriving at the same time.
“We are facing a dangerous escalation taking place in Lebanon, Israeli aggression with more than 100 airstrikes targeting innocent civilians in Beirut, Dahiyeh, Bekaa, Mount Lebanon and the south,” Lebanese Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine told Al Jazeera. This statement shows the Lebanese government’s concern about the increasing intensity of attacks which are considered to have exceeded humanitarian limits.
This attack occurred shortly after Iran and the United States announced a temporary ceasefire for two weeks on Tuesday April 7 to open space for diplomacy.
The agreement was previously hoped to be able to reduce tensions in the Middle East region, especially after major conflicts involving Washington, Tel Aviv and Tehran.
However, the reality on the ground shows that the situation is actually getting hotter. Israel’s latest attack is considered to have the potential to derail the peace efforts that are being initiated.
The impact of this conflict is not only felt in Lebanon. Disruptions to international flights are starting to occur due to increasing security risks in the region.
