KABAR-BANDUNG.COM – The President of the United States, Donald Trump, claimed that China had a role in pushing Iran to agree to a temporary ceasefire with the United States. The claim comes amid international efforts to defuse tensions that have persisted for more than a month between the two countries.
“I heard, yes,” Trump told AFP when asked whether China was involved in persuading Iran to agree to a ceasefire, Tuesday (7/4).
Trump’s statement was strengthened by information from two sources familiar with the course of the talks. They said that China was actively encouraging Iran to seek a path to a ceasefire agreement while negotiations were ongoing. This is as reported by the Associated Press.

However, until now the Chinese government has not provided an official statement regarding the alleged involvement. However, on various occasions, Chinese officials have emphasized their country’s commitment to promoting peace in the Persian Gulf region.
China’s diplomatic efforts can also be seen from the meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, and Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister, Mohammad Ishaq. Pakistan is known to play a role as a mediator in the conflict between the United States and Iran.
Reporting from CNN, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, explained that the two parties had exchanged views regarding the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between Global South countries in creating regional stability.
“This initiative is open and we welcome responses and participation from all countries and international organizations,” Mao Ning said at a press conference last week.
A two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran was reached on Tuesday, after an armed conflict that lasted more than a month. It is hoped that this cease-fire will be the first step towards a more permanent solution.
The two countries are scheduled to continue more comprehensive negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, on April 10, with the hope of producing a long-term peace agreement. ***
