President Prabowo Subianto received a telephone call from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday afternoon, April 21 2026. In this communication, PM Albanese expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s steps to start exporting 250 thousand tons of urea fertilizer to Australia in the initial stage.

“PM Albanese expressed his appreciation for the President’s approval regarding the export of Indonesian urea fertilizer to Australia amounting to 250,000 tons in the first phase,” said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in his written statement.

Apart from Australia, Indonesia is also expanding its fertilizer export market reach by exploring shipping to a number of other countries as part of strengthening Indonesia’s role in the global supply chain. The total export commitment reaches around 1 million tons.

“In the future, some urea fertilizer will also be exported to India, the Philippines, Thailand and Brazil, with a total export commitment of approximately 1 million tons,” continued Cabinet Secretary Teddy.

On the other hand, the government emphasizes that export policies are carried out in a measured manner while maintaining a balance in domestic supply, along with adequate national production capacity. Currently, the amount of national urea production is above domestic needs.

“According to data from the Minister of Agriculture, total national urea production is 7.8 million tons and domestic demand is around 6.3 million tons,” wrote Cabinet Secretary Teddy.

With this approach, exports not only provide added value to the national economy, but also ensure the availability of fertilizer for domestic farmers’ needs.

“This step is expected to maintain the resilience of domestic supply while strengthening Indonesia’s contribution to the global market,” concluded Cabinet Secretary Teddy.(BPMI Presidential Secretariat)
