CIREBON NEWS – After being made uncomfortable by Spain, Israel now faces new hostility by Hungary. This is related to the statement from the Hungarian Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, that he would arrest Israeli Leader Benjamin Netanyahu.
The policies taken by Peter Magyar are in contrast to those of his predecessor, Viktor Orban. Magyar will also halt Hungary’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), initiated by Orban.
According to Magyar, as an ICC member state, Budapest is legally obliged to enforce Netanyahu’s arrest warrant. So there was an attempt to arrest Netanyahu when he entered Hungary.

Please note, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in 2024 on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel claimed earlier this week that Magyar had spoken to Netanyahu and invited him to visit Hungary following the Tisza party’s landslide victory on April 12.
When asked to clarify, Magyar confirmed the call but downplayed the invitation, saying he had spoken to several leaders and generally invited them to attend the upcoming commemoration of the 1956 popular uprising.

Magyar added that Netanyahu was told that Hungary would seek to remain in the ICC – and what the implications would be. “I have made it clear to the Israeli prime minister that we will not back down [dari ICC]. “The Tisza government intends for Hungary to remain a member,” Magyar said.
“So I don’t think I’m misleading anyone. If a country is a member of the ICC and if a wanted person enters that country’s territory, they must be detained… I assume that every country and government leader is aware of this regulation,” Magyar stressed.
Magyar’s stance marked a direct break with the previous government’s stance, which rejected the ICC’s jurisdiction and guaranteed Netanyahu safe passage. Orban dismissed the warrant as brazen and cynical.

Last April, Budapest moved to withdraw from the ICC, arguing that the court had become politicized. The country’s parliament approved the move in May, although under the Rome Statute, withdrawal only takes effect one year after official UN notification, currently set for June 2.***
