OUR DRIVE-Two key US parliamentary committees have officially launched investigations into the national security risks associated with American companies using Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) models.
This investigation is based on deep concerns about potential data leaks, sensors and vulnerabilities in the supply chain.
The probe announced by the Chairman of the House Select Committee on China, John Moolenaar, and the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Andrew Garbarino, focuses on a number of companies, including Airbnb and Anysphere.

“Airbnb and Anysphere’s decision to build their products based on Chinese Communist AI models threatens critical infrastructure that Americans use every day,” Moolenaar said.
He added that the AI model was trained by China’s censorship regime and introduced hidden vulnerabilities for American businesses.
Andrew Garbarino warns that Beijing is seeking to turn America’s AI breakthroughs into a strategic advantage.

According to him, this model could undermine US leadership and embed CCP-aligned technology throughout the software supply chain on which the economy and national security depend.
The lawmakers said the investigation centered on concerns that Chinese companies were using “adversarial model refinements.”
This method is allegedly used to extract capabilities from advanced US systems and repurpose them into cheaper models without safeguards.

In a letter to Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, the committee cited reports of Alibaba’s use of the Qwen model in the company’s customer service operations.
“The committees have serious concerns about the national security and data security implications of this approach for Airbnb’s American customers and for the integrity of its systems,” the lawmakers wrote.
Chinese AI systems are accused of possibly secretly manipulating information in accordance with Chinese law.

In addition, the lawmakers also highlighted Anysphere’s Cursor software which is allegedly built on models related to Beijing-based Moonshot AI.
The letter alleges a coordinated campaign to extract advanced capabilities from American AI systems through malicious distillation by generating millions of interactions through fake accounts.
Reliance on this system is considered not just a business decision. “American companies adopting these models are not simply opting for cheaper tools; they are importing architecture designed to serve the Chinese state,” reads an excerpt from the letter to Airbnb.

The investigation follows an April White House science policy memo that described the activity as an industrial-wide campaign to exploit US AI capabilities.
The committee has asked both companies to provide detailed information regarding their handling of data and relationships with Chinese providers, with a response deadline of May.
This investigation takes place amidst increasing US-China competition in the AI sector which is considered crucial for economic and national security.***
