Hi Bandung – Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, confirmed on Thursday that his country would maintain its nuclear program and missile capabilities despite pressure from Donald Trump.
In a statement delivered on state television, he criticized the United States’ presence in the Persian Gulf, even saying there was no place for the US in the region.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz Increase
This statement was made in commemoration of Persian Gulf Day, and was his first public appearance since replacing Ali Khamenei.
He emphasized that Iran is entering a new phase in managing strategic areas, including the Strait of Hormuz which is a vital route for world oil distribution.
The situation escalated after the US naval blockade of Iran’s oil exports triggered a spike in global oil prices to around 126 dollars per barrel.
This condition not only puts pressure on Iran’s economy, but also raises concerns about the stability of world energy supplies.
Khamenei emphasized that Iran’s nuclear and military power is a non-negotiable national asset. He also reiterated sharp criticism of the US and rejected foreign interference in the region, amidst increasing world attention on the human rights situation in Iran.***
