ABOUT CIBUBUR – Iran on Monday, May 4 2026 claimed to have launched two missiles at a United States (US) warship in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing the ship to turn away from the strategic shipping lane.
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that the US frigate was targeted as it passed around the port of Jask.
The attack was said to have been carried out after the ship ignored warnings from the Iranian Navy, as reported by AFP.
According to the Fars report quoted from Xinhua, the US military ship was deemed to have violated navigation and maritime safety rules when it was in the waters near Jask.

“The frigate, which sailed on Monday in the Strait of Hormuz, violating navigation and maritime safety rules near Jask (port), was targeted by a missile attack after ignoring warnings from the Iranian Navy,” the Fars news agency reported.
Media affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also said that the ship was unable to continue its voyage and finally withdrew from the incident area.
However, this claim was immediately denied by the United States. A US official confirmed there had been no attacks on their ships in the area.
“The Iranian Navy did not hit any United States Navy ships near the Strait of Hormuz,” a US official told the Jerusalem Post Monday afternoon.

This incident occurred not long after US President Donald Trump announced plans to escort ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz by the US military.
The Strait of Hormuz itself is a vital world shipping lane which is the main distribution route for oil, gas and other important commodities.
Tensions in the region have increased since Iran implemented a blockade following conflicts in the Middle East, which had the impact of disrupting global trade flows.
Trump said the US maritime escort operation would begin on May 4 under the name “Project Freedom”.
“We will use our best efforts to get the Ships and their Crews safely out of the Straits. In all cases, they said they would not return until the area was safe for navigation,” wrote Trump on the Truth Social platform on Sunday, May 3 2026, quoted from AFP.

Responding to the plan, the Iranian military warned that any activity in the Strait of Hormuz must be coordinated with its party.
“We warn all foreign armed forces – especially the aggressive US military – that if they intend to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz, they will be targeted and attacked,” said Major General Ali Abdollahi, broadcast by state television station IRIB.
