OUR DRIVE-Presidential Secretary Dmitry Peskov, said that Russia prefers to achieve its goals in Ukraine through a peace agreement. This was conveyed by Peskov on Sunday, May 3 2026.
However, the Kremlin spokesman added that if Kyiv was not interested in doing so through a peace agreement, then Russia would achieve its goals through a strategic military alliance.
Commenting on US President Donald Trump’s statement about an imminent deal with Ukraine, Peskov said that “close to a deal” is a very broad concept.

He reiterated Russia’s position that it prefers a peace agreement, but that if Kyiv does not agree, Russia will persuade it with a special military operation.
Regarding the European Union, Peskov assessed that the organization is mobilizing using “blatant Russophobia” as a trigger and is ready to spend large amounts on the military.
“They are trying to compensate for the loss of the American defense component. And all this, of course, leads to our return to a period of very harsh confrontation with Europe, especially,” he said.

He highlighted that Washington could have put Kyiv in its place, but Europe was blocking those efforts.
In addition, Peskov warned of the potential for world oil prices to rise if Russia’s export infrastructure was damaged as a result of the Kyiv attack.
This was conveyed when he was asked to comment on the statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who rejected the West’s request not to attack Russia’s oil infrastructure.

Peskov also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump expressed similar views about the Kyiv government in their recent telephone conversations.
Ahead of Victory Day commemorations on May 9, Peskov announced that President Putin would hold bilateral talks with the guests in attendance.
