PEKALONGAN PORTAL – What is Hantavirus? Hantavirus is a group of viruses from the Hantaviridae family that is transmitted by mice and other rodents. This virus can cause two main diseases:
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS): a lung disorder that can be fatal.
Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS): hemorrhagic fever with kidney problems.
Origin and History
First identified in 1978 near the Hantan River, South Korea.
A major outbreak occurred in the United States in 1993, giving rise to the term HPS.
The Andes virus in South America is the only hantavirus that has been proven to transmit between humans, but cases are limited and not as widespread as Covid-19.

Situation in Indonesia
In Indonesia, there have been reports of hantavirus cases, especially regarding the Seoul virus.
Research shows that hantavirus is found in Java, Sulawesi and Denpasar.
Even so, distribution data is still limited and not widely known to the public.
Anticipation and Prevention
Avoid contact with mice: close the entrance to the house, store food safely.
Keep the environment clean: clean areas with potential rat nests with disinfectant.
