Three Days of Peace Failure: Russia and Ukraine's Fighting Continues on the Front Lines

OUR DRIVE-Russia and Ukraine traded accusations of violating a three-day ceasefire that was supposed to last during Victory Day celebrations.

Although a temporary peace deal has been announced, both sides report intensive attacks on various fronts.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that Ukrainian forces committed 16,071 violations of the ceasefire regime in the last 24 hours.

In response, Moscow launched counterattacks against Ukrainian multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, mortar positions, as well as command posts and drone launch sites.

On the other hand, Ukrainian authorities reported that at least one person was killed and 15 others were injured due to Russian attacks across the country during the ceasefire period.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said Russian troops had attacked their positions 60 times on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, Russia also claimed that there were 8,970 ceasefire violations that occurred in various conflict areas.

This ceasefire was initially agreed to take effect from Saturday to Monday to honor the 81st anniversary of the Soviet people’s victory in World War II.

“In accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, on the occasion of the celebration of the 81st anniversary of the Soviet people’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, from midnight May 8 to May 10, the Russian side declared a ceasefire,” wrote an official statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense via the TASS news agency.

This tension was colored by the satirical statements of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky during the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan on May 4.

Zelensky criticized preparations for the Russian Victory Parade in Red Square which he said lacked defensive equipment.

“If that happens, it will be the first time in many years. They cannot afford military equipment, and they are afraid that drones will fly over Red Square,” said Zelensky.***
