A senior US official emphasized that Washington has not changed policy regarding Taiwan, a self-governing territory that China claims as part of its territory. The US government is also said to not expect any policy changes in the near future.
The statement came amid speculation that Xi Jinping would seek to push for a change in the US’s stance towards Taiwan, including requesting a halt to American arms sales to Taipei.
The official added that US arms sales to Taiwan in the first year of Trump’s second term were greater than the total sales during the administration of his predecessor, Joe Biden.
This visit is the first visit by a US president to China since Trump’s visit in 2017, amidst the heating up of the Iran conflict and geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East region.
