News Screen — Israeli air strikes again rocked the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, Thursday, May 29 2026. Lebanese authorities reported at least 14 people killed, including children, in a series of attacks that worsened the security situation amid diplomatic efforts to maintain a ceasefire.

The Israeli military confirmed it had launched a “targeted strike” in Beirut, but did not specify the target of the operation. Meanwhile, a Lebanese military source said the attack hit an apartment in the Choueifat area, an area known as a Hezbollah stronghold.

Footage at the scene showed plumes of smoke rising from residential areas south of Beirut. A number of buildings were reported to have suffered damage, while residents were seen leaving their homes to seek safe places.

This attack was the second in south Beirut since the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah last April. However, the agreement is considered to have not been effective because both parties accused each other of committing violations.

Tensions escalated after Hezbollah claimed to have launched rocket and drone attacks on Israeli military positions in southern Lebanon. On the other hand, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said the escalation of violence in recent days had increased significantly.

“The ceasefire agreement did reduce the intensity of violence, but the situation has worsened again in recent weeks,” said UNIFIL spokesperson, Kandice Ardiel.

The Israeli military previously designated the area south of the Zahrani River, including the cities of Tire and Nabatieh, as a combat zone and asked residents to evacuate. Israel also stated that it would expand its military operations in Lebanon.

Israeli air strikes on Thursday morning also hit the cities of Tire and Sidon. In Tyre, the explosion occurred near a historic archaeological area that is one of the symbols of ancient Lebanese civilization.

Lebanon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Youssef Raggi, condemned the attack as damaging the historic environment, including churches, mosques and cultural sites that have stood for thousands of years.

“We are carrying out intensive diplomatic contacts to stop attacks on the historical area in Tyre,” wrote Raggi via X’s social media.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported two Syrians, including a child, were killed in Tyre. Meanwhile five other people died as a result of the attack in Sidon, including two women.

Another attack in the Adloun region reportedly killed six people in one family, including two children and both parents. Apart from that, a Lebanese soldier was also reported to have died as a result of an attack in the Nabatieh area.

On the Israeli side, the military stated that a soldier was killed as a result of a Hezbollah drone attack near the border on Wednesday, May 28, 2026.

This latest conflict has once again dragged Lebanon into tensions in the Middle East region. The situation became more complex after Iran and the United States accused each other of violating the ceasefire amid increasing gunfire in the region.

The Lebanese and Israeli military delegations are scheduled to hold talks at the Pentagon on Friday, May 30 2026, followed by negotiations mediated by the United States early next week to defuse the expanding conflict. ***
