Tehran Affirms Full Rights to Manage the Strait of Hormuz, Russia and China Are Given Privileges

SABACIREBON – The Iranian government emphasized that Russia and China will receive special treatment in various policies related to shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

This statement was conveyed by the Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament, Ebrahim Azizi, who assessed that the two countries had always been Tehran’s strategic partners.

According to Azizi, the close relations that exist between Iran and Russia and China are the basis for providing a number of conveniences for ships from these two countries, both merchant ships and tankers passing through these important shipping lanes.

He emphasized that Moscow and Beijing have shown consistent support for Iran in various situations, including in periods that Tehran considers the most difficult. Therefore, the Iranian government will pay special attention to the interests of the two countries in the region.

Azizi stated that the strategic cooperation that has been going on for many years is an important factor in policy making regarding shipping access and activities in the Strait of Hormuz.

Apart from touching on relations with Russia and China, Azizi also emphasized Iran’s position regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz which has very high strategic value for the country’s national interests.

According to him, the region is an inseparable part of Iran’s geographical environment and security interests. Therefore, Tehran considers that it has full authority to determine the policies it deems necessary regarding the management and supervision of this area.

Azizi emphasized that the decision taken by Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz is a sovereign right that cannot be questioned by other parties. He said that this waterway has important significance from a geopolitical, economic and national security perspective.

This statement comes amidst increasing global attention to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital energy shipping lanes. Most of the oil exports from the Gulf region every day pass through these waters before heading to international markets.
