ABOUT CIBUBUR – Pope Leo
Pope Leo’s statement was made in response to the International Day to Combat Hate Speech on June 18 which was established by the United Nations (UN).
The International Day to Combat Hate Speech aims to raise awareness of the dangers of hate speech, encourage tolerance and intercultural dialogue (between people from various backgrounds and differences), and encourage global action to prevent hate speech, both in real life every day, and through various social media networks.
Pope Leo emphasized that the lust for power and violence of words must be replaced by the thirst for justice and truth. And, everyone can and must do their part, starting with small but important things, namely refraining from all verbal or physical violence, in everyday life and also on social media.

“Pope Leo made this statement during his speech at the end of the Rosary Prayer in the Vatican Gardens on May 30 2026,” said Father Markus Solo Kewuta SVD, Staff of the Interreligious Dialogue Dicastery of the Holy See of the Vatican, Thursday, June 18 2026.
Padre Marco – that is Pastor Markus Solo’s nickname – then wrote down exactly the quote from Pope Leo’s statement which he had translated into Indonesian, “…there must be no more tears for the innocent people in our cities; no one should leave their home because of a bomb threat; the lust for power and violence of words must be replaced by the thirst for justice and truth. And everyone can and must do their part, starting with small but important things, namely refraining from all verbal or physical violence, in everyday life and also on social media.”
