Canada Top Group B After 6-0 Victory Over Qatar, Jonathan David Shines as Star Performer

Canada made history by securing its first-ever victory in the FIFA World Cup finals after thrashing Qatar 6-0 in a Group B match at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday, June 19, 2026.

Jonathan David stole the spotlight with a hat-trick, scoring in the 29th minute, first-half stoppage time (45+3), and the 90+2nd minute. Canada’s other goals were scored by Cyle Larin in the 16th minute, Nathan Saliba in the 64th minute, while Qatar defender Mohammed Manai added to Canada’s tally with an own goal in the 75th minute.

However, Canada’s emphatic victory came at a significant cost after key midfielder Ismaël Koné suffered a serious injury.

Koné was the victim of a reckless challenge from behind by Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo. As a result of the incident, the Canadian international sustained a fracture to his left leg. He was carried off the field on a stretcher while receiving oxygen assistance before being transported to a hospital for surgery.

“Because of the nature of the injury, and because Ismaël is such an important part of the heart of our team, this will be a huge loss. This is our biggest heartbreak,” said Canada head coach Jesse Marsch.

Marsch revealed that the challenge was so severe that the sound of Koné’s broken bone could be clearly heard from the Canadian bench area.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, Marsch did not place all the blame on Madibo. He disclosed that the Qatar midfielder personally visited Canada’s dressing room after the match to apologize directly to Koné.

Instead, Marsch questioned the reaction of some Qatar players and staff members who continued to protest the red-card decision following the incident.

Koné’s injury was only one part of a disastrous night for Qatar.

Earlier in the match, Homam Ahmed had already been sent off in the 33rd minute after a VAR review upgraded his yellow card to a straight red card.

The situation worsened when Madibo received Qatar’s second red card of the evening. Reduced to nine men, Qatar was unable to withstand Canada’s relentless attacking pressure.

Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui admitted that his team endured an extremely difficult night. He pointed to the two red cards and his side’s defensive vulnerabilities as the primary reasons behind the heavy defeat.

Switzerland Also Secure Convincing Victory

In the other Group B match, Switzerland defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1.

Johan Manzambi scored twice in the 74th and 90th minutes, while Ruben Vargas added a goal in the 84th minute. Granit Xhaka completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 90+7th minute.

Bosnia’s lone goal came from Ermin Mahmic in the 90+3rd minute.

Following the results, Canada and Switzerland occupy the top two spots in Group B with four points each. Bosnia and Qatar have one point apiece.

As things stand, all four teams in Group B still have a chance of advancing to the Round of 32.***
