A massive wave of Russian missile and military drone attacks struck Kyiv early Monday morning, shaking the Ukrainian capital with renewed intensity. The large-scale aerial assault came just ahead of the NATO Summit in Turkey. Local authorities reported that at least 14 civilians were killed and 117 others were injured in the long-range attacks.
Acting Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said large-scale rescue operations were still underway amid the rubble of destroyed buildings. Dozens of injured victims, including several children, had been rushed to nearby hospitals for intensive treatment.
“Sadly, this is not the final casualty count. Rescue operations are still ongoing,” Tymur Tkachenko said on Monday, July 6, 2026, as quoted by The Guardian.
A series of explosions began around 1:00 a.m. local time and continued for several hours. The attacks struck at least 15 multi-story residential buildings.
In the historic Podilskyi District, a nine-story apartment block was devastated from the fifth floor upward, leaving many residents trapped inside the burning structure.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescue crews had been deployed in full force, using ladder trucks to evacuate victims from collapsed buildings, including a 21-story apartment building in the same district.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense, in an official statement posted on Telegram, confirmed the attack. However, Moscow claimed that the operation targeted only military facilities, energy infrastructure, and airfields in several regions of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched a total of 68 missiles—including 23 ballistic missiles and six supersonic and hypersonic missiles—along with 351 drones.
Ukraine’s air defense systems managed to intercept 37 missiles and 326 drones, but failed to shoot down any of the Russian ballistic or hypersonic missiles.***
