Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi reaffirmed the commitment of India and Indonesia to strengthen cooperation in poverty alleviation through the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, healthcare services, and food security.
“We have a similar midday meal program and public distribution in Indonesia, and now we are elevating that cooperation to a higher level,” Modi said in a joint statement following a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
Modi stated that both countries share the same priority in ensuring welfare programs reach all levels of society. Therefore, Indonesia and India agreed to enhance cooperation through the exchange of experiences and best practices. “We have a similar midday meal program and public distribution in Indonesia, and now we are elevating that cooperation to a higher level,” said PM Modi, as reported by the Antara News Agency.
In the health sector, India and Indonesia also agreed to strengthen cooperation to improve public access to quality healthcare services. He mentioned that the agreement signed by the two countries would expand the availability of quality and affordable medicines from India for the Indonesian people. “Through the agreement signed today, quality and affordable medicines from India will become increasingly available to Indonesian citizens,” he said.
In the food sector, Modi said that India is ready to support the strengthening of Indonesia’s food security through increased cooperation in agriculture. This cooperation includes the exchange of best practices in sustainable agriculture as well as the development of agrotechnology to increase productivity and resilience in the food sector of both countries. Modi believes that strengthening cooperation in social welfare, health, and food security will provide real benefits to the people of Indonesia and India while deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, opened up opportunities for cooperation between her institution and the Indian parliament in various regional and multilateral forums. This was conveyed by Puan during her speech in front of Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, yesterday. “In addition to the bilateral friendship group mechanism, the DPR RI is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Indian Parliament in various regional and multilateral parliamentary forums,” Puan said. She hoped that the cooperation between the two parliaments would become more goal-oriented and provide real benefits for the welfare of the people of both nations. Puan also noted that the relationship between Indonesia and India is growing closer.
According to her, the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries was marked by President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to India in 2025. “We are two large democracies, fellow maritime powers in the Indian Ocean that uphold the principle of sovereignty amidst increasingly complex global geopolitical dynamics,” she said.
She stated that the DPR RI supports elevating the relationship between Indonesia and India into a comprehensive strategic partnership. The DPR also supports the implementation of the Shared Vision on Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific agreed upon during Modi’s visit to Indonesia in 2018. “Both documents serve as a solid foundation to expand cooperation in various fields,” she said. She also expressed appreciation for India’s Act East Policy, which places Indonesia and ASEAN as strategic partners.
