A catastrophic fire has swept through the popular Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in the Thai capital of Bangkok, killing at least 27 people. Local authorities immediately launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the disaster and check for potential safety violations. The investigation is primarily focusing on allegations that blocked emergency exits prevented patrons from escaping as the flames rapidly engulfed the entire venue.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul personally inspected the scene early Monday morning. Citing accounts gathered from survivors, Anutin revealed that the pub became filled with thick smoke moments after the fire broke out. The ensuing panic forced most of the patrons to flee toward the back of the building, specifically clustering around the restroom area.
Short Circuit
Director of the Bangkok Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, Suriyachai Rawiwan, stated that the disaster injured at least 63 people. According to an initial assessment by emergency response teams, the fire is strongly suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit in a ceiling-mounted air conditioning unit. The fire reportedly started near the front stage before aggressively spreading through the entire structure.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt affirmed that forensic teams will conduct a thorough examination of the scene to review the venue’s compliance with building safety regulations. According to local media reports, the pub owner was inside the building when the fire erupted and is currently receiving intensive care at a hospital for injuries sustained. “We need to wait for forensic investigators to examine the scene more meticulously,” Chadchart told local media.
A somber atmosphere filled the local police headquarters morgue on Monday morning as distraught families arrived to identify the bodies of their loved ones. On-site medical staff noted that the majority of the deceased were Thai nationals within the working-age bracket of 25 to 50 years old.
A Dark History
Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao is a highly popular live music venue located in the Chatuchak district, a northern Bangkok suburb renowned for its weekend market. According to testimony from Kan Kutirat, a tourist from Laos, absolute panic broke out inside the venue when flames erupted from the front door. Some people were even spotted running into the street with their clothes ablaze. “I heard loud screams from many people inside; it was total chaos,” Kan said, describing the terrifying ordeal.
Bodycam footage from rescue personnel revealed a heartbreaking scene inside the charred remains of the building. Firefighters wearing oxygen masks discovered several lifeless victims near the restrooms. Meanwhile, the main hall remained cluttered with bar tables and chairs warped by the intense heat.
The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of safety issues in Thailand’s nightlife venues. In 2022, a similar fire at a live music pub in eastern Thailand claimed 14 lives. Decades earlier, a massive blaze during 2009 New Year’s Eve celebrations at Bangkok’s Santika Club killed 66 people and injured over 200 after indoor fireworks ignited the venue.
