It’s Not Just Staying Up Late: This Sleeping Habit May Also Contribute to Premature Aging

How many hours did you sleep last night? If your answer is less than six hours or more than eight hours, it may be time to take a closer look at your sleep habits.

A large international study has found that both insufficient and excessive sleep are associated with accelerated biological aging. The findings suggest that sleep quality and duration affect more than just how refreshed you feel when you wake up—they may also influence the health of vital organs, from the brain to the immune system.

According to Euronews, the study involved nearly 500,000 participants from the UK Biobank health database. Rather than comparing participants based solely on their chronological age, researchers measured their biological age—an indicator of how “old” a person’s organs appear based on various health markers within the body.

Researchers Used Technology to Measure Biological Age

To examine the relationship between sleep patterns and the body, the research team employed a biological aging clock powered by machine learning.

The technology analyzed participants’ biological data, including brain scans, blood protein profiles, and various biomarkers that reflect the condition of different organs.

Using this approach, researchers were able to estimate whether a person’s biological age was older or younger than their actual chronological age.

The results revealed a consistent pattern. Participants who slept less than six hours or more than eight hours tended to exhibit signs of accelerated biological aging compared with those whose sleep duration fell within that range.

Nearly Every Major Organ May Be Affected

The study found an association between extreme sleep durations and faster aging across several vital organs.

Insufficient sleep was linked to a higher risk of brain-related conditions, including depression and anxiety. Short sleep duration was also associated with several chronic diseases, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Respiratory disorders such as asthma
  • Digestive problems, including acid reflux

On the other hand, excessive sleep was also associated with poorer health outcomes.

However, the researchers cautioned that this relationship does not necessarily mean that sleeping longer directly causes disease. In some cases, prolonged sleep may instead be a consequence of underlying health conditions that already exist.

“Our study goes further by showing that both too little and too much sleep are associated with accelerated aging across nearly every organ, supporting the idea that sleep plays a vital role in maintaining organ health within the coordinated brain-body network, including metabolic balance and a healthy immune system,” said Junhao Wen, the study’s lead author and Assistant Professor of Radiology at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in the United States.

Although the findings provide important insights into the relationship between sleep habits and organ health, the researchers emphasized that the study does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship.

In other words, the research only demonstrates an association between sleep duration and biological aging. It remains unclear whether sleeping too little or too much directly accelerates aging, or whether declining health itself leads to abnormal sleep patterns.

The researchers also noted that most of the sleep duration data was self-reported by participants. This method has limitations because it relies on individual memory rather than direct laboratory-based sleep monitoring.

More Research Is Needed

The researchers hope these findings will serve as a foundation for future studies using more precise methods of measuring sleep.

They also encourage further research involving participants from a wider range of ethnic backgrounds and geographic regions to ensure the findings better represent the global population.

Although additional evidence is still needed, the study reinforces the importance of maintaining healthy sleep habits.

Sleep is not merely a time for the body to rest—it is also essential for maintaining metabolic balance, immune function, and the long-term health of vital organs.
