“We created that calendar with the help of UNICEF,” Monfort said in an interview with the Associated Press in 2024.
He explained that Yamal’s family, who lived in the Roca Fonda neighborhood of Mataró at the time, entered a raffle that offered the opportunity to be photographed with a Barcelona player.
“UNICEF organized a raffle in the Roca Fonda neighborhood of Mataró, where Lamine’s family lived. They entered the draw to take a photo with a Barcelona player at Camp Nou, and they won,” Monfort recalled.
Monfort also revealed that Messi, who was known for being shy at the time, appeared somewhat awkward when asked to interact with baby Yamal. Nevertheless, the photoshoot went smoothly and produced what has since become one of the most iconic images in football history.
