Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri explained that the travel performance of foreign tourists and domestic tourists (wisnus) throughout January to May 2026 continues to show a positive trend. Based on the data, 6.07 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia in January-May 2026. This figure represents a 7.6% increase from the previous year.
“From January to May 2026, Indonesia recorded 6.07 million foreign tourist arrivals, growing by 7.68% compared to the same period in 2025,” Widiyanti Putri said during a press conference at the office of the Communication Agency (Bakom) of the Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
Meanwhile, the cumulative increase in domestic tourist travel reached 2.88% compared to the same period last year, although the growth rate was lower year-on-year. Regarding the decline in year-on-year (yoy) growth of domestic tourist travel, Widiyanti emphasized that cumulatively, the total number of trips still increased.
“Our data, as we previously conveyed, shows an increase of 8.69% in this month of May compared to 2025. In May 2025, there were 97.67 million trips, and in May this year, there were 106.16 million trips. Then on a year-to-date basis (January to May), there is a 2.88% increase, where this year saw 523.22 million trips and last year recorded 508.67 million trips. This is for the year 2026,” she explained.
According to Widiyanti, differences in growth rates from month to month are normal as they are influenced by seasonal patterns or seasonality. “So, the difference in growth figures from month to month is usually still normal due to seasonality. And cumulatively, we have already stated that the numbers are higher, in line with BPS,” she said.
Widiyanti also explained that the government is still awaiting the evaluation results regarding the impact of terminating the government-borne Value Added Tax (PPN DTP) policy for airplane tickets on domestic tourist mobility.
“Then regarding the question about PPN DTP. At this moment, we are still waiting for the calculated impact from BPS for June and July because this holiday period is not yet over,” the Tourism Minister said.
Even though the evaluation is still ongoing, the Ministry of Tourism has noted high public mobility during the school holiday period. “And from what we recorded from June 5 to July 2, more than 13.48 million arrivals were registered across 16 local provinces, 10 priority tourism destinations, and 3 regenerative destinations from all modes of transport. Domestic tourist travel was mainly concentrated in Bali, Java, and Sumatra,” she explained.
This data, according to Widiyanti, serves as one of the indicators that domestic tourism activity remained positive during the holiday season. The government will continue to monitor developments through official data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) before concluding the impact of the removal of the PPN DTP incentive on the national tourism sector.
