Google has announced that the number of monthly active users of its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant has surpassed 950 million. The milestone brings Gemini closer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which previously reached one billion users.
As reported by TechCrunch, the multinational technology company said Gemini’s user base has tripled compared with the previous year, according to its second-quarter 2026 earnings report.
The latest growth continues Gemini’s positive momentum.
In February 2026, Google announced that the application had reached 750 million monthly active users.
“We’re seeing users embrace our latest AI agent features, such as Daily Brief and the Gemini Spark personal agent, which are now available in the United States and internationally,” said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Gemini’s popularity is not driven solely by Android users.
Google said the AI service has also built a strong user base on Apple’s iOS devices.
Meanwhile, data from Appfigures shows that the Gemini app has been downloaded more than 137 million times on iPhones and iPads over the past 12 months.
The latest report from Sensor Tower found that ChatGPT’s market share in the AI assistant segment fell below 50 percent for the first time during the first half of 2026.
During the same period, Gemini’s market share rose to 27.7 percent.
Google also revealed that its search engine continues to grow despite the increasing use of AI applications as an alternative source for finding information.
The AI Mode feature in Google Search has now been used by more than one billion users.
According to Google, the feature has contributed to an increase in search queries while also helping reduce AI operating costs through the development of more efficient hardware.***
