Indonesia’s sport climbing team once again demonstrated its dominance in the speed discipline, winning two gold medals and one silver at the IFSC World Climbing Series Chamonix 2026 in France on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The result further reinforces Indonesia’s status as one of the world’s leading forces in speed climbing.
The two gold medals were won by Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi in the women’s individual speed event and Veddriq Leonardo in the men’s individual speed event. Meanwhile, Antasyafi Robby Al Hilmi claimed the silver medal after falling to Veddriq in an all-Indonesian final.
For Desak Made, the victory in Chamonix was particularly special. Besides earning her first title at the Chamonix series, the Balinese climber successfully extended her impressive run after winning gold at the World Climbing Series in Krakow, Poland, the previous week.
In the women’s final, Desak delivered a commanding performance against Italy’s Giulia Randi, clocking 6.22 seconds to secure the gold medal. Giulia finished second with a time of 6.51 seconds.
The bronze medal went to France’s Capucine Viglione, who defeated American climber Isis Rothfork.
Desak expressed satisfaction with her performance in the final, saying the victory was the result of her confidence and determination to always perform at her best.
“Tonight I delivered my best performance. I’m very happy to win this gold medal for my country and my team. I kept telling myself to give my very best,” she said, as quoted in an official statement.
All-Indonesian Final in the Men’s Event
Indonesia’s dominance was equally evident in the men’s speed competition, which featured an all-Indonesian final between Veddriq Leonardo and Antasyafi Robby Al Hilmi.
Veddriq captured the gold medal with a winning time of 4.89 seconds, while Robby secured silver after finishing in 5.11 seconds.
Japan’s Ryo Omasa claimed the bronze medal by narrowly defeating China’s Yicheng Zhao in a thrilling contest. Omasa recorded 4.701 seconds, edging Zhao, who finished in 4.704 seconds.
Veddriq said the Chamonix title held special significance as it marked his first gold medal since winning the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He admitted that he had gone through a difficult period due to being unable to train at full capacity.
“I’m extremely grateful. This is my first gold medal since the Olympics. Thank you to all the Indonesian people for your support. I gave everything I had, and I’m happy I was able to prove myself,” he said.
Coaches Praise the Team’s Performance
Indonesia’s assistant speed coach, Fitriyani, also praised the athletes’ performances.
According to her, the team did not undergo a special training program after competing in Krakow and instead focused on adapting to the conditions in Chamonix.
“Despite all the limitations we faced, the athletes were able to deliver their best performances. They fought with everything they had and produced outstanding results for Indonesia. We are proud of this achievement and grateful to all Indonesians for their prayers and continued support,” she said.
Indonesia Still Has Medal Opportunities
Indonesia still has an opportunity to add to its medal tally in the men’s lead event, after one climber advanced to the semifinal, scheduled to take place later that evening local time.
Indonesia’s strongest performance in the lead discipline came from Putra Tri Ramadani.
The climber, widely known by his nickname Srondeng, qualified for the top 24 after finishing 12th in the qualification round with a score of 13.32.
The result keeps the Prague series champion in contention for a place in the final.
Earlier this season, Putra also impressed by finishing fourth at the Innsbruck series, further demonstrating his consistency in the lead discipline.
The lead final is scheduled to take place on Monday, July 13, 2026.***
