THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – The long-standing tension between Iran and the United States appears to be entering a new phase. In the midst of the conflict that has affected the stability of the Middle East for years, the two countries released a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which contains a major commitment to stop military operations, open diplomatic channels, and discuss lifting economic sanctions.
This document, which was released from Tehran on Thursday, June 18 2026, is in the world’s spotlight because it contains various strategic points that have the potential to change the international geopolitical map.
Not only does it concern bilateral relations between Iran and the United States, this agreement also touches on crucial issues such as the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program, economic reconstruction and Lebanon’s stability.

Why is the MoU between Iran and the United States so important?
Relations between Iran and the United States have for decades been characterized by tension, economic sanctions and the threat of prolonged military conflict.
Therefore, the birth of this MoU is considered a very significant diplomatic step. If implementation goes according to plan, the world could potentially see:
- Decreased conflict escalation in the Middle East
- Stability of global energy trade routes
- Reduced threat to the Strait of Hormuz
- Opportunities for Iran’s economic recovery
- The reopening of international diplomatic channels
However, this agreement is still in the form of a memorandum of understanding and has not yet become a final agreement.
What is the content of the MoU between Iran and the United States?
The following is a summary of the 14 important points in the memorandum of understanding:
1. Stop wars and military operations on all fronts
The United States and Iran and their allies agreed to stop all ongoing military operations, including those related to Lebanon.
Both parties also committed not to start a new war, not to use threats of force, and to guarantee Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
2. Mutual respect for the sovereignty of each country
Iran and the United States agreed to respect each other’s territorial integrity and not interfere in each other’s domestic affairs.
3. Targeting the final agreement to be completed within 60 days
Both countries agreed to continue negotiations to reach a final agreement within a maximum time of 60 days, which can be extended by mutual agreement.
4. The US begins to lift the naval blockade of Iran
Once the MoU is signed, the United States will begin to remove the naval blockade and various obstacles against Iran.
Apart from that, the US also promised to withdraw its troops from around Iranian territory within 30 days after the final agreement was reached.
5. Iran opens safe passage for commercial ships
Iran will provide free safe passage for 60 days for commercial vessels passing from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman and vice versa.
Iran will also coordinate with the Sultanate of Oman and other coastal countries regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz.
6. The US has prepared a reconstruction fund worth 300 billion US dollars
The United States and regional partners have promised to provide funds of at least 300 billion US dollars or around IDR 5,353 trillion for the reconstruction and development of Iran’s economy.
The implementation scheme will be discussed in the final agreement.
7. The US promised to end various sanctions against Iran
This point includes plans to eliminate international sanctions, including primary and secondary sanctions that have been imposed by the United States.
The issue of lifting sanctions will also be the main focus in follow-up negotiations.
8. Iran insists it will not develop nuclear weapons
Iran reiterated its commitment not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons.
The two countries will also discuss the management of enriched uranium stocks under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
9. Maintain the status quo during negotiations
While waiting for a final agreement, Iran will maintain its nuclear program at its current state.
On the other hand, the United States will not add new sanctions or deploy additional troops to the region.
10. The US provides concessions for Iran’s oil exports
The United States Treasury Department will grant exemptions to exports of Iranian crude oil and supporting services.
This concession covers the banking, insurance and transportation sectors.
11. Frozen Iranian funds will be released
The United States promised to open access to previously restricted Iranian funds and assets.
The use of these funds will later be mutually agreed upon during the negotiation process.
12. Established a monitoring mechanism for the implementation of the MoU
Iran and the US agreed to establish an executive mechanism to monitor implementation of the MoU and ensure compliance with the final agreement.
13. Further negotiations are carried out after several points have been carried out
Discussion of the final agreement will only begin after the implementation of a number of main points, such as cessation of war, opening of trade routes and economic easing, is actually underway.
14. The final agreement will be confirmed by the UN Security Council
The final agreement will later be ratified through a binding UN Security Council resolution.

This MoU is not just an ordinary diplomatic document. There are three big issues of global concern, namely Middle East security, energy trade stability, and the future of Iran’s nuclear program.
Even so, this document is still a memorandum of understanding, so its implementation will really determine whether relations between Iran and the United States truly enter a new era or whether they face challenges again in the future.***
