THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – The Irish government took aggressive diplomatic steps by banning the visit of two high-ranking Israeli right-wing officials, Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. This decision was announced directly by Prime Minister Micheal Martin.

Quoting WAFA, this policy of refusing entry has received official approval from the Irish Minister of Justice, Jim O’Callaghan.

In Martin’s view, the track record of actions and public narratives often put forward by the two ministers are at a very worrying stage for geopolitical stability.

“The statements and concrete actions shown by these two officials are tantamount to expressing the desire to see the total eradication of Palestinians from their own land. Therefore, more progressive steps to take action must be immediately pursued at the European Union level,” he said.

Urges Collective Boycott and European Union Sanctions of Gaza

PM Martin emphasized that the humanitarian situation in the Middle East currently requires attention and a concrete response from the international community. Ireland does not want to move alone and plans to bring the issue of this ban to the negotiating table with other member countries of the European Union bloc.

According to Martin, the political constellation and humanitarian violations that are currently occurring are very eligible for collective sanctions throughout the European Union.

However, he admitted that building consensus and unifying voices among all member countries of the bloc was not an easy matter.

On the other hand, a spokesperson for the Irish Ministry of Justice explained that this travel restriction regulation was passed through a government approval mechanism outside the cabinet.

This move to block Israel’s right-wing minister is in line with Dublin’s foreign policy line which is committed to preventing the entry of individuals who are considered to be contributing to the escalation of the conflict in Gaza.

Following in France’s Diplomatic Footsteps

This bold decision taken by Ireland adds to the long list of European countries that have begun to limit the diplomatic space for hard-line Israeli officials. This step follows a similar policy previously declared by the French government.

Paris had previously announced restrictions on entry rights for certain officials amidst increasing pressure from various international institutions for the European Union to impose stricter economic and political sanctions.

Through the implementation of this new Irish diplomatic policy, Dublin hopes to send a strong moral signal to the international community regarding the importance of upholding human rights and ending violence in conflict areas, as well as pushing for comprehensive realization of European Union Gaza sanctions.***
