News Screen — North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reiterated his country’s support for Russia in its war against Ukraine. This statement was made when receiving a visit from the Russian Defense Minister, Andrey Belousov, as reported by North Korean state media, Monday, April 27 2026.

During the meeting, Kim stated that Pyongyang would continue to support Russia’s policies in safeguarding its sovereignty and security interests. He also expressed confidence that Russia would achieve victory in the conflict.

Military relations between the two countries have reportedly become closer since the signing of a cooperation agreement in 2024. The agreement includes a commitment to mutual military assistance if either party faces a threat.

A number of analysts assess that North Korea has provided support in the form of weapons, ammunition and military personnel to Russia. In return, Moscow is said to provide economic assistance, military technology, as well as energy and food supplies to Pyongyang.

Kim and Belousov’s meeting also discussed plans to strengthen long-term military cooperation, including the preparation of collaboration programs until 2031. In addition, the two attended the inauguration of a monument to commemorate North Korean soldiers who reportedly died in the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed his appreciation for the contribution of North Korean troops. In his official statement, he praised their dedication and courage in supporting Russian military operations.

On the other hand, the situation on the Korean Peninsula is still characterized by tension. The President of South Korea, Lee Jae-myung, again invited North Korea to re-establish peaceful relations. He stressed the importance of restoring trust for regional stability.

However, until now, Pyongyang’s response to this invitation has not shown significant changes. Inter-Korean tensions are still ongoing, along with increasing geopolitical dynamics involving major powers in the region.

This development shows that the conflict in Ukraine not only has regional impacts, but also affects the configuration of alliances and global security stability.***
