PAKUAN MEDIA, JOHOR BAHRU – The case of alleged brutal abuse of three Indonesian Household Assistants (ART) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, has entered a new phase. After videos of violence showing slapping, grabbing and beatings went viral on social media, the Malaysian police finally arrested the four alleged perpetrators.
However, behind these arrests, a big question arises: how many Indonesian migrant workers are still experiencing the same fate but choose to remain silent because they are afraid?
This case was revealed after one of the victims with the initials YY dared to report via the KSATRIA application belonging to the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru on June 13 2026.
This report was the gateway to uncovering the alleged violence that took place from the end of 2025 to January 2026.
Not only YY, two other victims, namely YA and SH, were also said to have experienced similar treatment from their employers.
Viral Video, Police Move Quickly
The viral recording of the abuse on social media sparked public attention in Indonesia and Malaysia. In the video, a domestic worker can be seen receiving rough treatment in the form of slaps, hair pulling and punches from a number of people in a house.
Shortly after the report was received, the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru immediately coordinated with local security forces.
The Director for Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, revealed that on June 13 2026 the police succeeded in apprehending four people suspected of being involved in the case.
The four consisted of two women and two men who were local residents of Johor Bahru. They are known to be between 30 and 34 years old and are currently still undergoing examination to reveal the motive for the abuse.
Malaysian police are also hunting for two other victims who are believed to be important witnesses in the investigation process.

KP2MI Ensures Victims Do Not Walk Alone
Increasing public attention to this case prompted the Indonesian government to intervene.
Deputy Minister for Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI), Christina Aryani, ensured that the state was present to oversee the legal process and recovery of victims.
“Based on information from the Indonesian Representative, the victim has submitted a report to the KSATRIA KJRI Johor Bahru and the case has been followed up with local law enforcement officials,” said Christina, Tuesday (16/6/2026).
According to him, KP2MI has coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru to confirm the victim’s condition and prepare the necessary assistance, from reporting facilitation to legal assistance.
“KP2MI together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesian Representatives will continue to monitor developments in this case and ensure that the victims’ rights are fulfilled in accordance with applicable regulations,” he stressed.
This statement is a signal that the government does not want this case to stop at just arresting the perpetrator, but also ensures that justice is truly felt by the victims.
Trapped in Illegal Routes, Afraid to Report
The most striking fact in this case is the status of the three victims who were known to be working non-procedurally in Malaysia.
The Minister for Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, Mukhtarudin, revealed that the victims did not have valid work permits. Even their passports are said to be still controlled by their employers.
This condition makes victims live in fear and are reluctant to report even though they experience violence.
“However, because he still felt his safety was threatened, one of the victims finally decided to ask the Indonesian Representative for help,” said Mukhtarudin.
This case is once again proof that migrant workers who leave via unofficial routes are in a position that is very vulnerable to exploitation, intimidation and even violence.

Don’t wait for new viral help
This case of abuse of three Indonesian household members gave rise to criticism as well as collective reflection. Many people question whether this case would have received as much attention if the video of the violence had not gone viral on social media.
On the other hand, YY’s courage to report via the KSATRIA application shows the importance of access to protection for Indonesian citizens abroad.
The arrest of the four perpetrators is indeed a first step that should be appreciated. However, the bigger homework is to ensure that all victims receive proper justice, recovery and protection.
Because there are quite a few Indonesian migrant workers who may still experience similar violence, but do not yet have the courage or opportunity to speak out.
Now the public is waiting for one thing: will the legal process proceed transparently until the perpetrators receive appropriate punishment, or will this case sink again after public attention subsides?***
