BUTOLPOST – This year’s commemoration of World Food Security Day is overshadowed by the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Middle East region. Tens of millions of people still face food shortages due to prolonged conflict, economic collapse, and waves of mass displacement that continue to disrupt food production and distribution.

The latest data shows that more than 18 million people in Yemen experience food insecurity. Meanwhile, around 13.3 million people in Syria are also in a similar condition due to the impact of the war that has been going on for years.

The most worrying situation occurred in Gaza. The entire food system in the region is reportedly collapsing, leaving around 77 percent of the population facing high levels of acute food insecurity. Ongoing conflict means access to food, clean water and basic services is increasingly limited.

On the other hand, Sudan is now listed as the country with the largest hunger and internal displacement crisis in the world. Millions of citizens have been forced to flee their homes due to the protracted armed conflict, while humanitarian assistance faces various obstacles on the ground.

The United Nations continues to call for increased funding and unimpeded humanitarian access to prevent the crisis from worsening. The organization warned that without immediate action and adequate international support, millions more people risk falling into conditions of catastrophic famine.

World Food Safety Day, which is celebrated every June 7, is a momentum to remember the importance of access to safe and sufficient food for all people in the world. However, for millions of citizens in the Middle East living amidst conflict and uncertainty, these basic needs are still a daily struggle.
