7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Northern Japan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ensures Indonesian Citizens Are Safe

JURNALACEH.COM – A tectonic earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude rocked the northern and northeastern regions of Japan on Monday, April 20 2026. This large shaking triggered the issuance of a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast, including the Aomori, Iwate and Hokkaido regions.

​Based on data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter or epicenter was in the sea, around 71 kilometers from Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture, at a shallow depth. Meanwhile, the Japanese government released the strength of the earthquake on a magnitude scale of 7.5.

​Local authorities immediately issued evacuation instructions for residents living near the coast and river mouths. The tsunami is predicted to reach a height of up to 3 meters.

​The government ensures that no anomalies or leaks have been detected at the Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) in the Aomori and Miyagi regions.

The Shinkansen high-speed train service on the Tokyo route to Aomori Prefecture has been temporarily suspended for security reasons.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi appealed to the public to remain on high ground until the official tsunami warning was lifted.

​Condition of Indonesian Citizens (WNI)

​The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) ensures that to date no Indonesian citizens have become victims of this disaster.

The Director for Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, stated that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo continues to monitor the situation intensively.

​”Until now, there have been no reports regarding Indonesian citizens affected by the earthquake,” said Heni in his official statement, Monday 20 April 2026.

​The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has also established communication with various diaspora nodes and Indonesian communities in Aomori, Iwate and Hokkaido Prefectures to ensure their safety.

​Emergency Hotline Number for Indonesian Citizens

​For Indonesian citizens who are in an emergency situation or need further information, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has activated a hotline service which can be contacted via the numbers +81-80-3506-8612 and ​+81-80-4940-7419.

​The government urges all Indonesian citizens in the affected areas to remain alert, monitor local news broadcasts, and follow evacuation directions from Japanese authorities. ***
