CIREBON NEWS – When the United States threatened to bomb a number of important bridges in Iran, Tehran issued the ultimate weapon by closing the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Yes, Iran will apply the same tactics to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, as it did in the Strait of Hormuz. So far, the strait has been controlled by the Yemeni Houthi Group, which is allied with Iran.
If the narrow Bab al-Mandeb Strait is closed, along with the Strait of Hormuz, a quarter of the world’s energy and most of Asia’s exports to Europe would be blocked.
Ali Akbar Velayati, a top adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, threatened that Iran’s allies could close the Bab al-Mandeb shipping lane as Tehran has done to the Strait of Hormuz.
Bab al-Mandeb connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is an important waterway for global oil trade. The importance of this route has increased since Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz – through which 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas passes in peacetime.
Ali Akbar Velayati, a former Iranian foreign minister known for his influence within the government, warned on Sunday in X that “the Resistance Front’s unified command views Bab al-Mandeb as the same as Hormuz.”

“If the White House dares to repeat its foolish mistakes, they will soon realize that global energy flows and trade can be disrupted with just one move,” Velayati wrote. Iran’s state-owned Press TV later confirmed his warning.
This follows US President Donald Trump’s threat to bomb Iran’s power plants and bridges starting Wednesday this week if Tehran does not agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has stated that Hormuz is open to ships from countries negotiating safe passage – apart from the US and Israel. Trump has previously threatened to bomb Iran’s desalination plants.
