News Screen – Astronauts on NASA’s Artemis II mission reported directly witnessing a number of meteorite impacts on the surface of the Moon, a rare phenomenon that has attracted the attention of scientists.
The incident occurred when the spacecraft crew carried out a flyby of the Moon, which was the first manned mission in more than 50 years. In communication with the control center, mission commander Reid Wiseman reported a flash of light on the surface of the Moon which was thought to have come from a meteorite impact.
“It was clearly an impact flash on the Moon,” said Wiseman when observing the phenomenon from orbit.

This observation was greeted enthusiastically by a team of scientists on Earth. Kelsey Young, lunar science lead on the mission, said he did not expect the crew to witness the phenomenon directly.
