KEPRI POST – The maritime security situation in the Strait of Hormuz is still unstable. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) also issued a warning asking all ships to exercise maximum vigilance when passing through the area.

In his official statement, an IMO spokesperson said that conditions in the waters around the Strait of Hormuz were still uncertain and at high risk.

“Ships must take maximum precautions and not take risks without guaranteeing safety,” he said, Monday 20 April 2026.

24 Attacks, 10 Sailors Killed

Based on data released by IMO up to April 19 2026, there were 24 attacks on ships in the affected area.

The attack left at least 10 sailors dead, while raising concerns about the safety of international shipping lanes vital for global energy distribution.

IMO, as a special agency under the United Nations, calls for de-escalation of conflicts and encourages multilateral dialogue and cooperation to reduce tensions in the region.

US Clears Sea Mines

In the midst of increasing threats, the United States Navy is reportedly carrying out operations to clear sea mines suspected of being installed by Iran.

These operations involve the use of combined technologies, including manned and unmanned systems such as surface and underwater drones equipped with sonar detectors.

This step was taken to ensure shipping lanes remain safe amidst the growing conflict.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, previously claimed that sea mines in the area had been or were being removed, although he had not yet received an official response from Iran.

However, tensions still have a significant impact on shipping activities. After Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz, 35 ships reportedly turned back within 36 hours.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategic shipping lanes in the world because it is the main link for global oil distribution.

Instability in this region not only impacts shipping safety, but also has the potential to trigger spikes in energy prices and global economic disruption. ***
